MX5 Icon A Bit Of All White

Deliveries of Mazda's new limited edition roadster, the MX5 Icon, have started arriving at dealerships and we couldn't help noticing this rather nice example.

whitemx5icon.jpgFrom memory, the last time Mazda released white MX5's in the UK was in 1998 when the mk 1 with "pop up" headlights was all the rage, which is a shame really as it looks quite something in the flesh. Since then we've been through 2 more generations of the cult roadster, finally leading up to today's mk4.

Even the previous Icon's launched in 2000 and 2005 were not offered in white, so it's baffling why it was dropped from the colour line-up in the first place.

Admittedly the new Mazda MX5 is an entirely different proposition from the older version's and has a much broader appeal to both male and female driver's with its wide arched body panels and more muscular appearance. You can no longer accuse this roadster of being a "girly car".

mx5-icon-leather-seats.jpgSporting Black "Medici" leather sports seats with red stitching as well as a unique Icon logo pressed into the headrest, the Mazda MX5 Icon isn't short on interior goodies. The model we looked at was the 1.8i and had climate control air-conditioning, a leather steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake to match the seats.

Exterior wise the Icon didn't look much different to the standard 1.8i MX5 with a set of 16 inch alloys wheels, twin exhausts and "Icon" badging on the front wings. However, their was a rather nice set of chrome style bars, an accessory normally available for around £100 (but your's for free) which finished the car off nicely.

mx5-chrome-style-bars.jpgThe car we saw was sold and judging by the specification and the pricing, the Icon is going to be snapped up pretty quickly, with only 875 1.8i's and 375 2.0i's being produced for the UK. The MX5 Icon starts from a very reasonable £16,825 for the 1.8i and £17,825 for the 2.0 litre version and has over £1500 worth of addition specification over and above the equivalent models, but costs only £500 more.

The Icon is also available in two other colours, Copper Red and Stormy Blue mica, as well as the Marble white you see here.

Mazda sell one in every four sports cars in the UK. Boosted by their stunning RX8 coupe and MPS branded 3 and 6 models they are 'Britain’s favourite sports car brand'. And judging by this latest line-up, they could keep that title for quite sometime yet.
